Brewing n Edwards Dreams By JOE E CERVI Staff Writer Todd Edwards saw his firstever major league baseball game three weeks ago in California The Angels were hosting the Detroit Tigers and Edwards was in the stands Jaw dropped in awe and truly amazed he then somehow found the time to go to Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles And Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego The coastal baseball tour would be a step closer to heaven for a fan But for a wouldbe major lea guer the Pearly Gates never looked so close The former Casa Grande standout is a profes sional baseball player Albeit the 21yearold south paw is finding his way through the perks and perils of the minor league system but hes a professional baseball player nonetheless It was kind of the softspoken Ed wards said I was watching those games and thinking I could be out there real soon I thought it was weird because Ive played baseball my whole life watch as many games as I can on TV and am now in a majorleague organization And Id never seen a real Edwards works out every day both with weights and on the field for the chance to watch the big leaguers from the best vantage point in the house the dugout Or better yet the field Picked in the 26th round of the June draft by the Milwaukee Brewers Edwards passed up his senior year at the University of Arizona to test the minor league waters After a 15day stint at the Brewers minicamp in Peoria he was called to the clubs rookie team in Helena Mont He hit 352 in 30 games for the Hele na club and was called up to the Class A Beloit team Called on to pinchhit his first day out for Beloit Edwards stroked an RBI single The first day I got there our DH designated hitter slid into second and broke his ankle so I got to DH and just jumped right into Edwards said They mostly used me as a DH at first then I started playing some outfield and a couple games at Edwards was an everyday player for Beloit He finished out the summer hitting 303 for the Brew ers and is back in Casa Grande The Milwaukee organization doesnt have a fall baseball program so Edwards is free until February What I Did On My Summer Vacation by Todd Edwards sounds like one adventure after another It ended Aug 29 but was jampacked with dream making stuff Got Drafted Quit school Played baseball for money Had fun Those kinds of things It was kind of neat the whole Edwards remembered Signing autographs people calling my mom for news about me Playing baseball for a living is kind of a good Class A baseball is an adventure in itself Ed wards was given a day for meal money At 6 foot3 190 pounds Edwards scoffs at the amount That was the biggest shock I had about the entire experience I could blow on one The players had to buy their own equipment and the bus rides were as long and boring as most bus rides are A victim of kangaroo court in clubhouse several times Edwards was once fined for missing first base running out a grounder His attorney and teammate got the fine reduced to Beloit in the summer is humid as hell and the baseball theres a step above Pac10 action The pitchers are about the same or a little bet ter but they throw a lot more offspeed Edwards said If you took a fastball you probably didnt get another one in that atbat But from junior college to college and up to A ball there definitely is a difference in With no regrets about forfeiting his senior year at UA Edwards signed with the Brewers He hit 319 and had 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases for the Wildcats in 1990 Edwards was a mainstay on the Central Arizona College teams of 1988 and 1989 As a freshman he hit 306 with 31 RBIs and four home runs His soph omore year he batted 320 with five dingers and 32 RBIs Hes got a good chance to succeed as a pro because hes a good contact hitter and can hit 300 at any level of the game He already CAC coach Larry Novvlin said He doesnt do anything poorly Hes got good speed and arm strength and he may not stand out in certain areas but hes good all A threeyear varsity letter winner at Casa Gran de Edwards led the team with a 433 average his senior year You hardly knew he was around because he was so Cougars coach Joe Nix said He led by example and led the team in hitting but didnt say much He just went out and did his Quiet in style Edwards dreams of the bigleague fields Workouts are monotonous but attended with visions of spring training entrenched in his mind Edwards just hopes it doesnt take another 21 years to see a real baseball game he said with a grin Hey its Staff Photo by Oscar Perez TODD EDWARDS takes batting practice at Cenby the Milwaukee Brewers TEMPE AP Denver coach Paul Westheads runandgun style that he used at Loyola Mary mount backfired as the Phoenix Suns routed the Nuggets 186123 in the NBA preseason opener for both teams Thursday night Rookie forward Cedric Cebal los who made all 12 of his field goal attempts scored 29 points for the Suns while Eddie Johnson add ed 27 Kevin Johnson 21 and Dan Majerle 20 Ceballos a secondround draft pick out of Fullerton State scored 18 points in the fourth quarter It was the most points the Suns have ever scored in any game in their 23year history Their regu larseason team record is 160 set against Portland on March 21 1972 You play according to the style of the Phoenix coach Cotton Fitzsimmons said If we had been playing a slow deliber ate team it might have been a different game This was a brand new team trying to get it together with a brandnew system Paul will get it going Dont you worry Nuggets about Denver made only 48 of its 126 shots from the field and commit ted 23 turnovers to spoil Westh eads debut Theres always a risk in a new Westhead said What I want is something that can be very good and is not easy to ac complish At Loyola we always were kind of suicidal for the first three or four or five games We beat ourselves so I know that pat tern Its just something you try to overcome through Denver committed 48 personal fouls and the Suns made 52 of 71 freethrow attempts Kevin Johnsons 11 points put Phoenix ahead 4733 after the first quarter The Suns led 7449 before Cebal los came off the bench to score 11 points in a span late in the second quarter AP Laserphoro KEVIN JOHNSON 7 of the Phoenix Suns drives against Den vers Chris Jackson during Thursday nights preseason game By BOB BAUM AP Writer CORVALLIS Ore Since theyre playing winless Oregon State Saturday the Arizona Wild cats could be expected to look ahead to next weekends crucial Pacific 10 Conference game against Southern Cal But Arizona coach Dick Tomey in rather graphic terms says the No 21 Wildcats cant afford to take anybody lightly even a team that has been outscored 17357 this season We know we cant beat any body we play if we dont spill our guts all over the he said Tomey has been trying to con vince his players that Saturdays game wont be easy He reminds them of what happened two years ago when the Wildcats struggled in Corvallis before escaping with a 2413 win In this conference anybody can beat he said We have a lot of respect for what Coa ch Kragthorpe has done at Oregon State A couple of years ago when we were up there we were very very fortunate to win Our guys remember The Beavers 01 in the confer ence and 05 overall may have a new starting quarterback when the game kicks off at Matt Booher the senior who has started all five games jammed the thumb on his throwing hand two weeks ago against Nebraska and didnt practice last week If Booher cant play the start ing nod will go to redshirt fresh man Fred Schweer who has been inconsistent when hes had the op portunity to play So far its been kind of mixed Kragthorpe said He did well at Stanford and not so well at After five years of steady im provement at Oregon State Kragthorpe is suffering through what he says is themost difficult year of his coaching career The Beavers have had succes sive losses to Montana Kansas NevadaLas Vegas Stanford and Nebraska Only the Montana Wildcats page 11 Bears Looking To Put Bite on Battered Sun Devils By WALTER BEKKY AP Writer TEMPE If Arizona State has any more injuries this football season its team picture probably will be an Xray The Sun Devils currently have 13 players including nine start ers on the sidelines and likely will be without 11 of them for Sat urdays Pacific 10 Conference game here against California Three starters got hurt in last weeks 4214 loss to Washington linebacker Darren Woodson sprained right center Paul DeBono bruised disc in back and nose guard Arthur Paul sprained left The defeat was the second straight for Arizona State which has gone from 21st place in the poll two weeks ago to falling com pletely out at 22 overall and 01 in Pac10 play I cant remember a time when weve had this many injuries but theyre hard to prevent when they happen in a thirdyear Sun Devils coach Larry Marmie I know were not happy happened and how were playing but I think our kids will respond and come California 32 11 comes to town riding a twogame winning streak and needs a win to equal its best overall start since 1982 and its best Pac10 start since 1980 But Golden Bears coach Bruce Snyder is not looking past the inju ryriddled Sun Devils Ive been coaching about 30 years and one thing Ive learned is you got to be ready to play every he said Arizona State is a very difficult place to play We havent played them since 1987 so we dont know a lot about their Snyder said he is relieved not to be facing Sun Devil senior quar terback Paul Justin who suffered a separated left shoulder in a 309 loss at Missouri on Sept 29 and is out at least another two weeks Redshirt sophomore Kurt Lash er made his second career start last week and completed only 9 of 25 passes for 147 yards with four interceptions three in the final 11 minutes Justin has a terrific arm I think anybody would be relieved not to face Snyder said But I saw Lasher as a high school player in Fresno Hes got some talent Hes been thrown into the fire but 1 think hell be OK as soon as he gets some more Marmie will stay with Lasher as the starter Saturday We think hes the best pre pared to lead us right Mar mie said I dont think there was anything wrong with Kurts per formance last week We didnt ex pect to lay it all in Kurts lap and have him get it done by himself We needed to support him Washington held the Sun Devils to 172 yards total offense and 25 rushing yards on 22 carries while rolling up 329 of its 495 offensive yards on 60 rushes For the last two weeks Cal has run the ball very well and I think theyll try to play us the same said Marmie I think theyll line up and run right at Senior tailback Anthony Wal lace has 445 yards and two touch downs on 99 carries for the Golden Bears so while sopfiomore Russell White has 404 yards and five TDs on 74 carries Junior quarterback Mike Paw lawski has hit on 88 of 152 passes for 997 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions Our running backs and the of fensive line have been really posi tive things in our Sny der said Pawlawski has been a great team leader He absolutely loves to play and he plays at a very physical Theyre getting the ball in the hands of both their said Marmie But people have moved the ball against them in the air Theyre averaging 30 points a game on offense but theyre giving up 31 points 180 yards a game rushing and 200 passing Hopefully well take ad vantage of Arizona State leads the 14year old series 65 with wins in two of the last three games but Cal won 3820 in 1987 at Berkeley in the last meeting A crowd of is expected at Sun Devil Stadium
