offense appeared to be the overwhelming factor after the Grizzlies defeated Northern Ari zona 4814 but coach Don Read gave the credit to the defense The defense was the story to Read said after the game here Saturday It was really a solid defensive effort I dont feel this year weve had as many big plays as in past years but last weeks and this weeks are helping We didnt have a lot of sacks but we were around the he added The Grizzlies forced seven turn overs including five intercep tions and scored after four of them while improving to 22 in the Big Sky Conference and 52 over all Montana is ranked 17th among NCAA Division IAA schools The Lumberjacks fell to 24 and 34 and Northern Arizona coach Steve Axman bemoaned his teams turnovers I thought we might have a chance as long as we didnt do ex actly what we he said If we didnt make the mistakes we could have had a chance to be in it but that wasnt the story today One thing we couldnt do is get in a scoring match with Mon he added It the second quar ter when quarterback John Bonds hit flanker Hendricks Johnson with a 3yard scoring pass Bonds also connected with La mont Shedrick on att 8yard TD pass in the fourth period With 14 seconds to go in the first half Goulet intercepted a Bonds pass at the Grizzly 20yard line Montana then held on to the ball as time ran out to preserve its mo mentum heading into the second half If we had scored again before the halftime least it would have made it more competitive and put us in the running to come said Axman Montana connected on 31 of 47 passes for 293 yards with Bennett hitting 26 of 35 for 236 yards and Lebo 5 of 12 for 57 yards NAU suffered five interceptions in completing just 16 of 54 at tempts for 192 yards Bonds hit 14 of 43 attempts with four intercep tions for 164 Roadrunners Edge Blades KANSAS CITY Mo AP Jeff Rohlicek had two goals while Chris Kontos Mickey Volcan and Daryn McBride all scored in the second period as the Phoenix Roadrunners beat the expansion Kansas City Blades 54 in Interna tional Hockey League action Saturday nights victory snapped a fourgame losing streak for Phoenix which lost 62 at Fort Wayne on Friday night The loss kept Kansas City win less at 050 Kontos powerplay goal into the second period forged a 22 tie before Volcan scored an unas sisted shorthanded goal at the mark while the Roadrunners had two players in the penalty State Warriors 128124 here Satur day night The victory pushed Phoenixs preseason record to 40 with four games remaining It was especially noteworthy since the Suns had four players out of the lineup AllStar
